jorgensens head to canada
Last spring (yes, I know this blog post is a little late 🫠), our family took a memorable fishing trip to Canada. It was a full-circle moment as we returned to the same resort my parents used to take my sister and I to as kids. This trip was extra special because it allowed us to pass down the tradition to our boys. The cold winter days here in Cedar Falls, Iowa, have me already dreaming of the warmer days up north—feeling the sun on my face and, of course, getting back out on the water to fish again. 🎣☀️
Why I Chose to Bring My Expensive Camera
I knew this trip would be one to remember, and I didn’t want to rely solely on my phone to capture the moments. As a professional photographer based in Cedar Falls, I’ve always believed in the power of high-quality photography to tell a story. So, despite the risk of possibly ruining my expensive camera, I made the decision to bring it along for the ride. It was worth it.
I wanted to capture more than just the typical snapshots. I wanted to freeze those little moments—the quiet times, the laughter, and the beauty of our surroundings—on something that would last. And looking back now, I’m so glad I did.
A Family Tradition: Fishing at the Same Resort
For generations, my family has visited the same Canadian resort for fishing trips. Before I was even born, my grandparents made the journey there, creating memories that would last a lifetime. One of the spots they loved to fish for crappies has always held a special place in our hearts. Unfortunately, that area hadn't been producing much lately.
On one of the days of our trip, we decided to head there anyway, hoping for a good catch. The fishing was slow—really slow—but we stayed hopeful. In the end, my mom and my oldest son each caught a fish. It might sound small, but it meant so much. As we sat there, tears welled up for my grandparents, who are no longer with us. It was a beautiful and emotional moment that I was able to capture with my camera. It’s one of those memories I’ll cherish forever. 🥲
A Cowboy Photo Session (Despite the Complaints)
Of course, no family trip is complete without a proper photo session! Even though the boys weren’t too thrilled about the idea, I wasn’t going to leave Canada without getting some good shots of them. They got to pick their own outfits (naturally, they chose a cowboy theme), and we even added my other grandpa's bolo tie to the look. It made for some memorable photos that are now proudly displayed in our home.
Why Photography Matters for Special Family Memories
As a photographer in Cedar Falls, I often tell clients that photographs are more than just pictures—they’re a way to capture the essence of a moment. A photograph has the power to bring you back to a time, a feeling, or a place in a way words sometimes can’t. That’s why I take my camera everywhere. Whether it’s a family fishing trip to Canada or a quiet evening at home, those moments are precious, and I’m grateful to have the ability to capture them.
Wrapping Up: A Trip I’ll Never Forget
Our family fishing trip to Canada was full of laughter, love, and a few tears. From the special fishing memories to the cowboy-themed photo session, I’ll treasure these moments forever. As I look out at the cold Cedar Falls winter, I can’t wait for the warmth of the Canadian sun to return. Until then, I’ll be reliving these memories through the photos I took—photos that will tell the story of our family for generations to come.
